Upscale Living sat down with makeup artist Janeen Jones (JJ) to find out her top trend choices for spring. This
year, green glamour reigns supreme on the runway and the streets.
UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE: What are your signature makeup tips?
JJ: Tip #1 If you really know your face, you’ll be able to know what will work for you. So…don’t be afraid! look and
really see your face and features and learn how to enhance your unique beauty.
-look at your face shape
-look at what you like (a feature you want to highlight, play up )and what you dislike (a feature you want to
camouflage,diminish)
-look at your eyes (are they big/small,close together/far apart, deep set, heavy lidded, dark circled or tipped down at
the outer corner?)
Tip #2-Think Balance……Yin and Yang…light and dark…Anything light, will bring out (highlight) Anything dark, will
bring back (create depth and ‘set’)
-if you like darker or more colorful eyes, balance it with softer, neutral cheeks and lips
-if you like bold, dark or bright lips, balance it with neutral colored eye makeup
Example:if wearing Hot Fuchia/Magenta lip color….purple shadow and liner is ‘NOT’ the way to go!
Example: if you feel your lid is heavy (sits close to lashline or on lashes) or has fine lining or lose skin…don’t use a
light or frosted shadow because anything light will highlight. Use a matte medium shade shadow to minimize the
look of fine lines.
Tip #3-One shadow/Two looks. Different applicators will give you different shades of the same eye color
-use a Fluff shadow brush to apply a light-med shade all over lid.(it will be soft, light, subtle)
-use a sponge eye shadow applicator with the same shade applied purposefully at the outer corner, from the lash
line to shaded just above the crease. The sponge holds and concentrates the color and pigments and will appear
deeper and richer in color but blends seamlessly.
Tip #4-Remove a little Q
I am a big fan of cotton swabs{Q-tips} to help me achieve what I’ve been told is my ‘signature seamless transition’
eye makeup looks.
Step 1: pull a little cotton off the top of a swab and re-roll between your fingers.lightly pull/swirl the de- bulked
swab over 2 shades of shadow. You want to blend into each other.
Step 2: pull off a little more and re-roll tight. Dip in a med-dark shadow and use as an eyeliner for a smokey eye or
in place of pencil liners if they feel awkward for you.
UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE: What are your favorite product choices to achieve a beautiful ‘Spring Green’
makeup look?
JJ: Bed Head pencil eyeliner in Teal; Dior 5 colours designer eyeshadow palette 408 Green Design (my fav of the
bunch shade pick sheer glimmering mint); Bed Head Cyberoptics single eyeshadow in green; Too Faced Starry
Eyed Glitter Liquid eyeliner; Sephora stackable lipgloss in Muse (sheer apricot).
