Skiing Innsbruck
By Mitch Kaplan
"You think the Royal Hapsburgs liked to ski?" I joked as I strolled with friends
through Innsbruck Austria’s Old Town. The Hapsburgs ruled central Europe from the
13th to the 20th century. They probably weren’t skiers, but they made Innsbruck
into an alpine cultural center. Their legacy still produces a unique dynamic for
winter visitors, skiers and non-skiers alike. Innsbruck, twice a Winter Olympics
site, isn’t a ski resort. It’s a city. There’s industry here, a university and,
cultural sophistication spiced with spectacular, snow-capped mountains. You don’t
actually "ski Innsbruck," as you might ski Vail or Courchevel. Instead, you travel
twenty to forty minutes to any of nine ski areas, and spend your non-ski hours exploring
a culture that ranges from the medieval to ultra-modern.
