Singer Turbo Study is Analog Supercar at its Glorious Best

You might have heard of Singer and it is known for ‘Porsche 911s being restored and reimagined’ by them. It has made a name doing that and also via its craftsmanship plus its gorgeous design by only enhancing the appeal of timeless Porsches. Its latest creation caught our eye and it is called the ‘Turbo study’. It is the first road-going, turbocharged Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer and incorporates the classic 911 Turbo within a modern prism. More than 70 owners have reserved bespoke restorations for the study so there is a lot of love for this genre of 911s. To understand this creation, one needs to step back in time to the ‘whale tail’ spoiler 911 Turbo of the 1970s. The original 911 Turbo of 1975 forms the ethos on the base of a 964 underpinning. 

This particular car is for an owner who clearly loves the 911 Turbo in its original avatar but Singer has only taken those design cues and wrapped a gorgeous body around it. The whale tail spoiler for one is seen along with the shark fin being reimagined. Finished in ‘Wolf blue’ the color fits in with the luxury grand tourer vibe of the original Turbo quite well. As always, the Type 964 generation of air-cooled cars is being used as the canvas while the study features a “Mezger” air-cooled flat-six. It makes over 450hp in this car with the 3.8L twin-turbocharged, intercooler flat-six and can be tailor-made to increase the power according to the owner’s tastes. 

It remains a hardcore driver’s car at heart though with a 6-speed manual transmission and a rear-wheel drive layout. Bespoke air to water intercoolers are mounted inside the intake plenums plus the ‘shark fin’ on the rear fender has now been reimagined as an intake and supplies cold air to the engine bay to optimize combustion and cooling performance. The design may be paying tribute to a classic shape but like other Singer reimagined 911 the body is made from carbon fiber while being entirely bespoke. 

The interior meanwhile is finished in Malibu Sand with Black Forest wood accents along with amenities like electric heated seats. Revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, the Turbo Study looked stunning and is wider than the original Turbo but does not deviate much from the overall design aesthetics. 

This car, unlike the DLS Project, is not so wildly expensive and nor is it a limited edition but it is still considerably expensive at $750,000. However, for the 70 buyers who have already signed for one, the 911 reimagined by Singer remains a particular motoring experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else while the Turbo is arguably one of their prettiest creations of all time.
