Recent times have made all of us rely heavily on technology. While text messaging and video calls cannot replace the physical touch and convenience, we made did of what we had. However, a Los Angeles-based startup has some other plans. Founded in 2020 by David Nussbaum after 20 years in the entertainment industry, he envisions Portl to facilitate communication of all kinds that can add an emotional element that previous virtual methods lack.

Portl M is a new set-top device that aims to change how we look at video calls. The device brings in holograms without the use of an AR or VR set. The founder believes his new hologram viewer could bring some more life to these calls by allowing the viewers to beam in each other’s homes by broadcasting a 3-D image from one M to another. With a mini-fridge size, this device can evolve the way we interact through video calls.

Portl M can be used in both portrait and landscape modes and features an AI-enabled camera that films you and generates video with simulated depth to it, according to New Atlas. The M is also sadi to include 16 GB of system memory, 1 TB of storage, and a high-definition touchscreen. Apart from video calls, this marvelous device can also be used for conferences, games, shopping, telemedicine, fitness, and more. They have recently added another cool feature of displaying trendy NFT art.

The startup plans to launch its product by March this year, which can be reserved through its website with a $100 refundable deposit. Currently, the device is available in two colors – Dark Matter and Nimbus White.

While it’s still a couple of months away from becoming a reality, the hologram machine could bring the world of science fiction movies true.
