Gianmarco Cardia’s latest project is a breathtaking yacht concept is centered around the use of Dyna Rig sails, the 80m S/Y Vela. Dyna Rigs are a rare find and there aren’t many yachts like them with the exception of Oceanco’s 106.7m Black Pearl, or Peri Navi’s 88m Maltese Falcon. On Vela, Dyna Rig sails have a dual purpose: part of them can be also used as a screen, or for an outdoor cinema (as you do).
Cardia aims to create an indoor-outdoor experience by way of electric glass doors that optimize the movement between exterior deck space and interior living space. The upper-deck lounge comes with a piano bar and an additional cinema. The interior of the yacht comes with four guest cabins and 1 master room, a wellness area with a gym, plus a lovely spa and a beach club, with a bar and big lounges for relaxing in the sun. The yacht is 80 meters long, with a 14.3-meter beam and it could easily accommodate up to 10 guests and also has eight en-suite cabins for a crew of 16.
“When I designed the exterior, I [wanted] to make something simple,” says Cardia. “I imagined the body of Vela molded by the wind—without sharp edges—and characterized by flowing lines. I think that the terraces on the rear part of the upper deck are the best areas to spend time on board—you can enjoy a beautiful panorama while dining alfresco just near the upper-deck lounge.”
Vela boasts no less than 1,850 square meters of sail, a 14.30m beam, and been equipped with hybrid propulsion to reduce pollution. Her steel hull is sleek and soft, paired to an aluminum superstructure that offers up outdoor spaces for maximizing onboard recreation and relaxation. Vela is projected (despite the hull not being finished yet) to reach a top speed of 21 knots when using both sail and engine propulsion.
A wellness center with a spa and a pool, as well as an indoor cinema lounge are on the upper deck; the sundeck plays host to another, larger pool and requisite sunbeds where guests can lounge while watching movies projected on the sails of the front mast. There is also a water-level beach club with bar and the main deck with an additional bar and a sunbed.
What’s more, Vela houses a main-deck master suite—with fold-down balconies and its own hot tub—as well as four guest staterooms below decks. Belowdecks is a beauty salon and a wine cellar. It is here, in the lower-deck lobby, that the spiral staircase circling a glass elevator connects to the main-deck saloon with dining area and a private conference room. “The finishings are classic but contemporary, and the colors are inspired by the villas on the coast of Sardinia,” says Cardia.
