Vartan Gregorian was a world-renowned philanthropic foundation and university leader, historian, and humanist. He is credited with saving the New York Public Library (NYPL) system in the 1980s. Unfortunately, he passed away last April at 87 after being hospitalized for stomach pain. Born to Armenian parents in Tabriz, Iran, Mr. Gregorian arrived in America in 1956 to study history and the humanities at Stanford University. He was the president of the NYPL (from 1981 to 1989) and smartly used his charm to fund the library, and its brand building after significant budget cuts a decade ago.
