Favoring clean lines and timeless shapes, Nicole Hirsch’s Cape Cod home reflects her contemporary yet welcoming design aesthetic. The designer and founder of Nicole Hirsch Interiors opens up about her background, her design philosophy, and the family home she recently renovated.
Nicole, did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path?
Growing up, my mom was an interior designer, so I was always surrounded by the business and learned from her firsthand. Back then, the industry was very different—there were countless trips to the Boston Design Center since online sourcing didn’t exist yet. I was always inspired by beautiful homes and knew early on that design would be part of my future.

Please tell us more about your home.
We recently bought and renovated our home in Cape Cod, a popular summer destination for families from the Boston area. It has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms across two floors. This was our third summer here, and while the location and bones were stunning, the interiors were dated. We did a full overhaul—everything from floors to millwork, doors, and lighting. After the renovation, I fully furnished each room to make it feel cohesive and fresh.

You have your own boutique design firm. Did you do your home’s interior design yourself?
Yes, I designed every detail of the home myself. I partnered with Kevin Smith of LDS Construction to bring my vision for our oceanfront retreat to life.

How would you best describe your design style?
I’d describe my style as contemporary with a timeless, neutral sensibility. It’s not overly modern or cold. I focus on clean lines and shapes, but I add warmth through texture and finishes. I like to think of it as livable luxury.

Where—or who—inspires your design style?
I admire designers across Europe, Canada, and the U.S., and I love following their work. But ultimately, much of what we create for clients is customized to their homes and lifestyles. Clients often tell us our work has a unique, recognizable aesthetic, which makes me very proud. We’re also inspired by our incredible fabric and bespoke millwork vendors. Their creativity often sparks showstopping pieces in our projects.

How do you keep decorating fresh and new?
Every house invites its own story. We might design a historic brownstone in Beacon Hill one week, then a modern new-build in the suburbs the next. Each project needs to align with the architecture and character of the home. We always let the house guide us—it leads us down the right design path.

Is there a specific color you gravitate toward in design?
We are big believers in neutrals. For us, timelessness comes from calm, neutral shades. White Dove and Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore are two favorites—they’re warm but versatile enough to pair with anything. We use these shades as a base and then add depth with wallpapers, wood stains, or unique finishes to bring character into the home.

Do you believe in repurposing?
Absolutely. If a piece still works in scale and proportion, we love to incorporate it. We often reupholster a lounge chair or re-stain a table to give it new life. It’s rewarding to integrate pieces that carry meaning into a fresh design.

Do you have any special heirloom pieces in your home?
Yes, my favorite heirlooms are art pieces from my parents. Over the years, I’ve “borrowed” a few works from their walls. One special piece in our bedroom was purchased during a trip they made to New Orleans when I was in college. It feels like it was meant for this house and carries wonderful memories.
Which part of your home is your favorite?
The patio and pool area, without a doubt. When we bought the house, the backyard was small and overgrown. From the start, we knew we wanted to transform it. We worked with Shoreline Pools to design an outdoor oasis with a pool, jacuzzi, and patio that maximizes the ocean view. Now, sunset cocktails, barbecues, and poolside afternoons with the kids make it the heart of our home.
Where do you spend the most time?
When we’re not outside, I love our primary bedroom. The high ceilings, light oak furniture, and glass doors overlooking the ocean create a calming sanctuary. At night, we often slide the doors open and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. It’s incredible.
Who do you share your home with? Were you open to design input from your family?
I live here with my husband and our three children, who are 15, 13, and 9. Designing with their needs in mind was essential. Each child has their own room with space for friends to stay over. While I did take their input on décor for their rooms, they generally trust my aesthetic and process.
Parting thoughts?
After years of creating homes for clients, designing one for my own family was such a joy. It means so much to have a space that reflects my style and also serves as a place to host friends and family. From fresh flowers in the summer to backyard barbecues, this home is where we’ll make memories for years to come.
