Bugatti W16 Mistral was never intended as a conclusion. It is the final expression of the marque’s W16 era, an architecture defined as much by engineering ambition as by design discipline. In its Sur Mesure form, however, it becomes something more considered: a singular object shaped as much by restraint as by performance.

The W16 Mistral “La Perle Rare” emerges from that philosophy. Conceived as a one-off commission, it reflects a collaboration between client and atelier that unfolds less as customization and more as authorship.

The project began on the lawns of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure, met the client behind the commission. What followed was a process defined by alignment, of proportion, of material, and of intent, guided by a shared understanding that refinement lies in control.

The exterior is built around a precise duality. A bespoke two-tone composition separates the car into upper and lower volumes, creating a visual tension that shifts with light and movement. Inspired by Bugatti’s “Vagues de Lumière,” the finish captures reflection as a living surface, never static, never fixed.

Two entirely new hues define the palette: a gold-inflected tone across the upper surfaces and a refined white enveloping the lower body. The transition between them is executed entirely by hand, through a process of taping, masking, and layering that required hundreds of hours to complete. The result is seamless, less a division than a gradient of light.

Even the wheels are resolved within this language, finished in a custom blend that mirrors the bodywork, ensuring continuity across every surface.

Inside, the composition tightens. Carbon elements are rendered in white, creating a concentrated, almost architectural interior. Gold accents trace the geometry of the cabin, following concave forms and reinforcing a sense of flow that mirrors the exterior.

Ambient light is introduced with precision, allowing surfaces to shift subtly between shadow and reflection. Polished aluminum components, steering wheel, console, and controls capture that light and return it with quiet intensity.

The name “La Perle Rare,” rendered in Straub’s own hand, appears throughout the car as a discreet signature stitched, engraved, and painted into the object itself. It reads less as branding than as inscription.

Elsewhere, Bugatti’s lineage is referenced through Dancing Elephant, integrated with restraint across both interior and exterior surfaces. The gesture is measured, connecting the car to its heritage without interrupting its clarity.

What defines the W16 Mistral “La Perle Rare” is not its singularity, though it is unique. It is the coherence of its execution. Every line, every surface, every reflection resolves toward a single idea.

Precision, held in motion.
