In 1776, a document drafted in Philadelphia altered the course of history. Two and a half centuries later, a whiskey now seeks to honor that same moment—not with spectacle, but with craft, lineage, and quiet symbolism.
Whiskey JYPSI, the Nashville-based distillery from Outsiders Spirits co-founded by country singer Eric Church and entrepreneur Raj Alva, has released Legacy Batch 003, aptly titled The Declaration. Timed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the limited-edition release revives a Colonial-era Maryland-style rye mash bill, bridging early American distilling tradition with modern whiskey precision.
Rather than chasing novelty, The Declaration looks backward with intention.

Before bourbon dominated the American whiskey canon, rye stood as the spirit of revolutionaries. The Declaration honors that heritage through a disciplined three-part blend: 60 percent rye aged eight to twelve years and finished in Mount Vernon apple brandy casks; 30 percent corn whiskey aged twenty to twenty-five years and re-barreled in new American oak; and 10 percent Virginia single malt aged eight years. Bottled at a commanding 57.87 percent ABV, the whiskey delivers both structural authority and aromatic nuance.
Packaging, developed in collaboration with Greyson Clothiers, carries its own layer of historical symbolism. Design elements draw from Mount Vernon iconography, early American distilling motifs, and the Gadsden flag’s timber rattlesnake, an emblem of unity famously associated with Benjamin Franklin’s “Join or Die” woodcut in The Pennsylvania Gazette.

The third release in Whiskey JYPSI’s Legacy Series, The Declaration presents itself less as a commemorative novelty and more as a studied tribute to American whiskey’s formative era.

“Maryland-style rye was what George Washington himself distilled at Mount Vernon,” says Whiskey JYPSI whiskey maker Ari Sussman. “It balanced rye’s characteristic spice with the sweetness of corn, and that balance is what we set out to create.”
The blend’s architecture reflects that equilibrium. The rye component comes from eight- to twelve-year-old 95/5 rye sourced from Indiana. The corn element originates as twenty- to twenty-five-year-old Canadian corn whiskey, later re-barreled in new American oak for two and a half years to develop depth, vanilla, and cocoa notes. Completing the profile is an eight-year-old American single malt from Virginia, which adds a fragrant, floral, biscuit-forward aromatic lift.
“When Eric and I started JYPSI, we said we would have no rules other than producing the best products we could, regardless of complexity or cost,” says Alva. “Sourcing from one of the oldest and most historic distilleries in America to produce The Declaration is a perfect example of that spirit.”
Church echoes that sentiment. “To mark the 250th anniversary, we wanted to make something that’s more than a commemorative bottle,” he says. “It’s a testament to the grit, restlessness, and innovation that built this country.”
Sussman, who has guided the whiskey’s development, offers a pointed reflection on celebrity-backed spirits. “Generally, seeing a celebrity’s signature on a bottle raises a red flag,” he says. “Typical celebrity brands involve an existing company seeking to expand its market with an endorsement. Outsiders Spirits breaks that mold. Eric and Raj built this company from the ground up. They assembled a dedicated team, acquired premium whiskey stocks, secured new fill contracts, and stayed involved in every crucial decision. Their passion for whiskey and whiskey culture shows through.”
Founded as a purpose-driven incubator for whiskey innovation, Outsiders Spirits first gained attention in 2023 with its Legacy Series, which reconstructs historic mash bills through modern blending techniques. Its Explorer Bourbon and Tribute Double Barreled Bourbon followed, earning critical acclaim. In 2024, Whiskey JYPSI received the Whiskey Maker of the Year award from Whiskey Network.
The Declaration now stands as the most historically anchored expression in the portfolio, a whiskey that does not merely reference the past but materially engages with it through sourcing, cask selection, and blend design.
Available in limited quantities, Whiskey JYPSI Legacy Batch 003: The Declaration carries a suggested retail price of $199.99 and is offered through select wine and spirit retailers as well as online at buy.whiskeyjypsi.com.
For a nation approaching its quarter-millennial milestone, the release arrives not as a firework, but as a quiet, amber-hued meditation on origins, where rye once led the revolution, and where American whiskey, once again, pauses to remember where it began.
