When Matthias Welzel learned of the General Manager position working at the Hilton Lake Como, he saw the opportunity as a step toward living the dream. “I grew up in Germany, but I think I have an Italian heart,” Welzel said.
With 170 rooms and suites, the hotel is located less than a block from Lake Como’s shores. With a rooftop restaurant delivering panoramic views of the lake and the Lombard Alps, Welzel’s work residence is the Italian epicenter for marriage proposals, Valentine’s Day escapes, and year-round vacations all flavored with a hint of romance.
After working in leadership roles in London, Malaysia, Malta, Israel, and Austria, Welzel listened to his heart and said “yes” to Lake Como. Welzel shared how the Hilton Lake Como is a must-see vacation destination for travelers seeking beautiful scenery, a vibrant Italian culinary scene, and a sense of adventure that is unique to northern Italy.
What were your first impressions of the hotel when you arrived in 2022?
I loved the location and the proximity to Lake Como. Where we are positioned is a calm environment. We’re just far enough away. We are close, but not too close. Our hotel is conveniently located near so many sights and interesting venues. Of course, we also offer spectacular views.
When I first arrived, I liked how the hotel was modern, but you could feel the heritage and the architecture. Our building is a former silk factory. Silk plays a major part in the Lake Como story, and our hotel definitely has a story to tell.
What are the advantages of your location?
We are 30 miles north of the Milan airport and train station. Once guests have checked in, our location allows them to walk to the lake and experience the attractions. It’s also just a 20-minute stroll along the promenade to the historic city center with all the cultural sites, restaurants, and shopping. The ferry boat hub that connects you to our neighboring cities like Bellagio and Varenna is just 20 minutes on foot. The funicular with its fabulous views is a lakeside 30-minute walk.
You’ve had a chance to work all over the world and learn from different cultures. What is your leadership style?
I believe that connecting with your team, connecting with your guests, and instilling the local flavor of your hotel is important. Guests appreciate a certain immersion with their destination. I’m passionate about people. I like to say that the fourth language I speak is hospitality.
What does Hilton Lake Como offer that makes a guest’s stay special?
Our Terrazza 241 restaurant, located on our rooftop, presents one of the finest dining views that you’ll experience anywhere in the world. Our rooftop is also the location of our infinity pool and morning yoga. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy one of our specialty drinks, or read a good book.
Our concierge team welcomes any questions or requests. We love customizing a stay based on the unique desires of our guests. We can arrange for a private boat tour on the lake, a massage at our eforea spa, or provide an e-bike for exploring the city.
We also offer classes that are pertinent to the Lake Como region. These currently include a pizza-making class, a Spritz mixology class, and a silk tie-making experience.
What would you like travelers to know about the Hilton Lake Como that is perhaps under the radar?
I’d like them to know that we are a year-round destination. Most people think of Lake Como as a place to go in the spring, summer, or fall. While that is certainly the case, our hotel is also a wonderful setting in the winter season.
For outdoor enthusiasts, we are a great locale for hiking. Skiers should know the Alps and Dolomites, located in northern Italy, are perfect for those seeking an amazing ski travel package. The atmosphere in Lake Como during the winter, with the mountain peaks covered with snow, has a vibe all its own. Our town, decorated with holiday lights, is magical. We’re also looking forward to 2026 because the Winter Olympics are in Italy.
Lake Como is truly a great year-round destination. I encourage you all to stay at the Hilton Lake Como and join me in living the dream.
