Scotland’s Carnoustie Golf Hotel

Scotland’s Carnoustie Golf Hotel

Scotland is the birth place of golf, and one of the most famous courses in Scotland is the Carnoustie Links, home to the 1999 and 2007 Open Championship golf course. The course has hosted rounds of golf dating back as far as the 16th century.

The four star Carnoustie Golf Hotel – every golf lover’s dream hotel – sits overlooking the 18th green of the Links, as did our suite. The hotel is home to 96 rooms, including ten suites, and has recently benefitted from a multi-million pound refurbishment which was carried out over three years, in anticipation of Carnoustie playing host to the 147th Open, which took place in July 2018.

We visited the hotel in early August and just missed all the golf spectators who congregate for the Open. The hotel is a two-hour drive from Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city and 10 miles from Dundee the “City of Discovery”.

I was staying in the Carnoustie Suite with hubby, and two teenagers in tow. The suite is perfect for a family of four. The lounge was transformed into an additional bedroom, which we gave over to the children and we took the master bedroom. The most outstanding feature of the suite is the balcony which looks directly on to the 18th green. We spent our evenings enjoying the summer nights and the last of the good weather.

The suite was spacious and tastefully decorated in a Highland tweed style, with a television in both the lounge and the master bedroom. The USB ports were especially handy with our typical teenagers who are forever losing their charger plugs. The suite and the views were so lovely that we ended up spending quite a lot of our break in the suite.

Unusually for a Scottish hotel there was an ice-making machine on our floor, which thanks to the heatwave we were experiencing, hubby and the children took full advantage of using.

There is a large heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and also a spa at the hotel, unfortunately we didn’t get round to trying out these facilities, however we did take a look and everything looked spotlessly clean and up to standard.

Scotland Bespoke Carnoustie Hotel

We dined at the newly refurbished Calders Bistro on our first evening at the hotel. The menu offers a wide selection of locally sourced freshly prepared dishes, typical Scottish fare and last orders are at 9.30pm.

When we weren’t hanging out, chilling in our suite, we visited the beach which is a five-minute walk from the hotel. Carnoustie is a perfect starting point to visit many of Scotland’s stunning beaches, and we also spent a day at Lunan Bay which is busier but equally as beautiful.

There is an abundance of information on local sight-seeing at the front desk. And if you still require further information, look no further than Derek, a member of staff who has been working at the hotel for decades and can answer any question put to him. Trust me both our teenagers tried to catch him out, but were unsuccessful. All the staff were wonderful and that is especially important when travelling with family, they put all of us at ease.

The only issue we incurred was that the first time the housekeeping serviced our room it was not up to standard, but as soon as we reported this back to the main desk they immediately sent the cleaner to rectify the issue, and all was good in the world again!

The other thing visitors should be aware of is that the hotel is located to a nearby army barracks and the noise from the shooting ranges is very loud and causes quite a bit of a disturbance, like a never-ending background track, by day 2 we had got quite used to it.

The great thing about Carnoustie country is that it is home to an incredible 34 golf courses. So if golf is your thing, this is the place to be. Whether you are a golf fan or not, The Carnoustie Hotel is definitely worth a visit, as there is plenty on offer other than the golf.
