How to Turn Your Home into a Recording Studio

A few years ago, if you wanted to be a singer then you had to be at the mercy of recording studios to practice and record. However with time, technology progressed and became more accessible.

This means that now you can set up a recording studio inside your own home to help you improve your skills and develop as an artist.

This is important because dealing with recording studios can be a mess. They are very demanding and the chances of success are not very high either.

With the success of platforms like YouTube, you have the world as your listener. You can upload content there and wait for it to go viral. In fact, even Justin Bieber got his big break due to his YouTube videos. However, for it to be a success you must be able to record high quality audio.

To help you in this regard, given below are some valuable tips on how to turn your home into a recording studio.

1. Choose the Best Room | The first and foremost step while making a home studio is to choose the best room in the house. The following list discusses important features of a good room for this purpose:

  • Size: Make sure that the room selected is adequate in size. Size is important as you may need space for more musicians and equipment. Plus, too  a small room may negatively impact the acoustics as well. The room should at least be 10’ x 10’ x 10’, but anything bigger would be better.
  • Noise: Noise from the surroundings can be picked up through the microphone and ruin your recording. In order to avoid this from happening, choose a room that has the least amount of disturbance. A good option is to use soundproofing not just to keep the disturbance out but also to keep you from disturbing others.

2. Take Everything Out | Next step is to clear out the room. Take anything that is on the walls and floors including paintings and decoration pieces. They can vibrate and cause disturbance and also result in the sound to bounce back. The less objects or obstructions in the room the less likely the sound will act unpredictably.

3. Soundproofing Windows and Doors | Use soundproof doors and replace original window glass with double glazed window glass to make them soundproof as well. This isn’t really a practical solution for most as it’s extremely expensive. Therefore using heavy curtains and sealing air-gaps in the doorways and windows is a cheaper alternative (not quite as effective though). 4. Make Sure the Room has Proper Ventilation Moisture in the room can damage your equipment which is why is extremely important that you have good ventilation in the room to keep the moisture out. Just remember open windows or air vents are an easy path for noise or sound to travel.

5. Buy Your Equipment and SoftwareThe final step is to get your musical equipment and computer set-up. This includes good recording software as well. Remember to check homerecordingpro.com for advice on what you’ll need and where to get it.

Remember that setting up a home studio will take time but it is worth it.
