Initio Perfumes are well-known to those of us who are unapologetic about our need for raw, potent animalic notes, primal odours, sexy smell, and unashamedly provocative aromas.
Initio is a Latin word, meaning the origin, and initiation, and the renegade French perfume house, founded in 2015, sets out to initiate perfume as an object of power.
Artistic director Sonia (her surname is secret) was influenced by Patrick Suskind’s book Perfume – and the power of perfume.
She comments: ‘In the beginning, in ancient Egyptian times, perfume was used for everything except to smell good. It was used to create magic, to attract love, to purify the home, to communicate with the gods, to cure, and to cleanse the body. Even up until today, in some countries, you have that culture of perfumes being used to clean and purify – in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, for example. Even in the Middle East, where they know perfume better than anyone, perfume is still used as an object of power.’
Initio Parfums seeks to share perfume’s role as an ‘invisible pheromonal force’. It has worked with leading perfumers, such as Constantin Gueros, Alexandra Kosinski, Alberto Morillas, and Maurice Roucel. They started with The Absolutes (which focused on natural ingredients), beguiling synthetic Magnetic Blends, Carnal Blends (“mini-bombs of sensuality that speak so clearly to our intimate animality), and then a Hedonist Collection.
One early perfume, the radiant and solar Blessed Bakas, was endowed with a sacred strength to provoke luck. Another, Magnetic Blend was described by the brand as bestial…. with pheromone effects.
