Sunspel has unveiled a new knitwear collection that brings together two of the world’s most exceptional fibres: Sea Island cotton and cashmere. The premise is deceptively simple: blend the rarest cotton with the softest cashmere, then refine the result until the balance feels effortless.
Sea Island cotton, grown in Jamaica, represents just 0.0004 percent of global production. Celebrated for its extraordinary fibre length, strength, and silk-like lustre, it has long been regarded as the pinnacle of cotton. Cashmere, sourced from the undercoat of Mongolian goats, introduces lightness, warmth, and softness. Combined, the two create a fabric that is breathable yet insulating, with a clean, fluid finish.
The development took three years. During that time, Sunspel worked to perfect the blend, fine-tuning knit tension and calibrating yarn weight until the fabric achieved a precise equilibrium, substantial without heaviness, warm without excess, and refined enough to sit seamlessly beneath tailoring.
“Sea Island cotton has been part of Sunspel’s story for generations,” says David Telfer, the brand’s design director. “With this new blend, we wanted to honour that heritage while creating something entirely modern, an elegant knit that moves effortlessly between seasons.”
Founded in 1860, Sunspel has built its reputation on fabric innovation and understated craftsmanship. The brand created the world’s first luxury T-shirt, introduced boxer shorts to Britain, and continues to produce its classic styles at its Long Eaton factory, where it has been based since 1937.
The Sea Island Cotton Cashmere collection is offered in a refined edit of silhouettes, including a crewneck and a knitted polo, presented in Midnight Navy, Dark Chocolate, and Bark. The result is a modern essential designed to travel easily across climates, occasions, and wardrobes, quiet luxury in its most considered form.
