The family-run Andersen Hotel is a boutique delight and a cozy, quirky retreat from which to explore the delights of Copenhagen
Copenhagen is everything that travelers worldwide love about Scandinavia, beautiful clean neighborhoods, quirky design, fantastic shopping, fresh locally produced food, stylish inhabitants, and of course the Hygge lifestyle, making Denmark one of Europe’s happiest nations. Just a few minutes walk from Copenhagen Central train station, and its direct train service that zips you from and to the airport, and major attractions such as the world-famous Tivoli Gardens and the trendy Vesterbro shopping and bar ‘Meatpacking’ district, the Andersen Hotel is a popular, stylish base from which to indulge in the city’s many attractions.
A warm welcome
Located on a bustling street corner you enter the Andersen Hotel directly into a large lobby area that has recently been refurbished. Sitting on a large Fritz Hansen sofa next to the reception three smiling life-size teddy bears wait to greet you. The lounge area is furnished in rich emerald and cherry velvets. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, convivial and a dash eccentric – here is a knitting basket for guests with yarns of wool and knitting needles should you want to wile away a few hours, and on a cold December day like today with angry east winds and wreaths of rain lashing Copenhagen from the Baltic it feels like a great idea. The welcome from the amiable staff is kind and genuine. The Andersen Hotel is beginning to feel like home.
Choose your mood
A lift brought us several floors up this smart tall building to our Amazing Junior Suite. The hotel has 69 wooden floored air-conditioned rooms in 4 different varieties ranging. All are uniquely decorated in three themes. You can choose their design depending on your mood from ‘Mermaid’ (turquoise and lime); ‘Emperor’ (blue and magenta) or ‘Princess’ (magenta and purple), which was the style of our room. All the wallpaper, cushions, and curtains come from the celebrated Designers Guild.
The 27 m2 room was very large with tall soundproofed windows overlooking the street far below. The large king-size bed had gorgeous Quilt of Denmark duvets to snuggle up into. There was a cozy pink sofa that could be turned into a bed for one or two children up to the age of 12. Design touches included chic Frandsen Lighting bedside lamps and a bathroom with Philippe Starck fittings. The bathroom itself also boasted a large rain shower, soft towels, and Molton Brown toiletries. A minibar and Nespresso machine is standard.
A very comprehensive continental buffet breakfast is served in the lounge on the ground floor by staff wearing smart designer David Andersen uniforms. You can choose from 10 kinds of bread, freshly baked pastries, Danish cold cuts, smoked salmon, and several vegan options. There are plenty of hot dishes on offer from omelettes to pancakes. There is complimentary coffee and cakes provided all day and the hotel has a courtesy wine hour every day at 5 pm for guests to meet and mingle – it’s all very Danish. The hotel’s sister property the Absalon, a stone’s throw across the road, has a very relaxing bar area in the lobby.
The hotel has several green initiatives to make your stay even more seamless. ‘Concept 24’ is one where guests who book directly with the hotel are allowed to retain their room for 24 hours from the time of their check-in. Another is ‘Concept Green’, where if you decline to housekeep, you get a a drinks voucher for the bar. The concierge can help with advice as well as arranging tours around the city to hire out guest iPads and bicycles.
Rooms start from $240pn and are bookable via the hotel’s website. Breakfast included.
