Cut and polished from the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona rough diamond, the Graff Lesedi La Rona is the largest square emerald cut diamond in the world. Revealed recently by Graff, the massive stone weighs 302.37 carats and boasts the largest highest (top D) color and highest clarity diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Known for finding the world’s most extraordinary diamonds, Graff made history once again after finding the stone in Botswana’s Lucara Karowe mine. The massive 1,109-rough diamond was purchased by Graff for $53 million but presented challenges due to its size and structure.
The emerald cut was so large that it had to be analyzed using new custom-made software to uncover its potential. Over the course of 18-months, Graff’s expert gemmologists plotted which cuts to ultimately yield the impressive 302.37-carat emerald cut diamond.
Translated to English, Lesedi La Rona means “Our Light” and was placed by the GIA in the group of ‘super deep’ diamonds due to its estimation of forming deeper than other diamonds.
