Rubies cover nearly every visible surface, two tourbillons revolve at its center, and the indicators for the hours and minutes appear to move without any obvious connection to the mechanism beneath them. It is theatrical, unapologetic and technically audacious—the sort of creation that makes telling the time feel almost incidental.
That is precisely the point. Jacob & Co. has never built its reputation on restraint. The New York maison approaches haute horlogerie as spectacle, combining complicated mechanics with high jewelry in pieces designed to provoke an immediate emotional response. With the Mystery Tourbillon Full Ruby, the brand transforms a traditional watchmaking illusion into a kinetic sculpture rendered in white gold and more than 41 carats of rubies.
The effect begins with scale. Measuring 50 mm across and 22.75 mm thick, the watch has the proportions of a miniature architectural object rather than a conventional dress watch. Its grey-toned white-gold case provides the hidden structure beneath an uninterrupted field of gemstones, while a dramatically domed sapphire crystal creates the height required for the movement’s rotating centerpiece. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters, although this is clearly a timepiece intended for admiration rather than aquatic adventure.
Set into the case are 212 hexagonal baguette-cut rubies, placed using an invisible-setting technique that conceals the supporting metal beneath them. Without visible prongs interrupting the surface, the stones appear to merge into one continuous red composition. It is an exceptionally demanding form of gem-setting because every ruby must be cut with the precision required to lock into the structure while maintaining consistent color, alignment and brilliance.
The dial takes the illusion even further. Rather than relying on conventional hands, the watch uses two rotating mystery discs, both covered in rubies. The minute disc carries 119 blood-red stones totaling more than 10 carats, with a single white diamond marking the exact minute. The hour disc is set with 143 rubies weighing approximately 8.41 carats, again interrupted by just one white diamond to indicate the hour. As the discs rotate, the two diamonds travel through the ruby field as though detached from any visible mechanism.
This visual trick draws from the long history of mystery clocks and watches, whose indicators seemed to float because their transparent supporting discs were largely invisible to the observer. Jacob & Co. takes that elegant sleight of hand and amplifies it with a level of color and mechanical movement that belongs unmistakably to the 21st century.
At the center of the watch are two triple-axis tourbillons positioned back-to-back. A tourbillon was originally developed to counter the influence of gravity on a watch’s regulating organ, but here the complication becomes a performance in its own right. The paired cages rotate continuously through three axes, creating movement that is difficult to follow with the eye and nearly impossible to ignore. The first axis completes a rotation every 60 seconds, while the second and third complete their rotations every two minutes. The two tourbillons are linked by a differential, allowing their motion to remain mechanically synchronized.

The ruby-set rings orbit the tourbillons, the white-diamond indicators trace the passing hours, and the entire display changes character depending on the angle of the light. Powering the spectacle is a manually wound mechanical movement operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offering a 60-hour power reserve. The movement is skeletonized, allowing portions of its architecture to remain visible beneath and around the gemstone-covered display. For all its theatricality, the watch remains a serious piece of mechanical engineering, one in which the time display, gem setting and multiple-axis tourbillons have been conceived as a single composition rather than as separate decorative elements.
The Mystery Tourbillon Full Ruby was introduced in 2020 as a one-piece limited series, making it less a production model than a singular statement of what Jacob & Co. could achieve when freed from conventional commercial constraints. Its listed price was CHF 1,507,908, placing it comfortably above the million-dollar threshold and firmly within the rarefied world where watches are acquired as collectible art.
That exclusivity is important, but it is not the watch’s most compelling quality. A great high-jewelry timepiece must do more than accumulate carats, just as a great complicated watch must do more than display technical virtuosity. The Mystery Tourbillon Full Ruby succeeds because the gemstones and mechanics are inseparable. The rubies do not merely decorate the movement; they conceal, frame and intensify it. The tourbillons do not simply regulate the watch; they animate the entire composition.
On the wrist, it would be impossible to wear discreetly. The dimensions, saturated color and constant motion make anonymity out of the question. Yet despite its extravagance, there is refinement in the precision of its execution. The uninterrupted ruby setting, the two small white-diamond indicators and the rotating tourbillons create a surprisingly coherent design from elements that could easily have become overwhelming.
