Dreaming of a winter getaway (already)? Look no further than Park City. The town is a skier’s paradise thanks to its world-class resorts, magical powdery snow, and quaint lodges that ooze refined comfort. Ski destinations may be aplenty in North America, but they can’t compare to the unique charm and character of Park City. Plus, there’s the perk of convenience; a speedy 40-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport (serviced by a bounty of direct routes) will get you right onto the ski-in ski-out lodge, so you’ll be on the slopes before pals heading north have even reached their layover.
Winter’s favorite town isn’t just about the skis, though. Visitors and residents alike are treated to outdoor recreation that can range from snowmobiling to dog sledding to tubing (as well as a slew of summer fun, which we’ll save for another guide). Stay at the World’s Finest Ski Hotel
For those in town to take to the slopes, being based at the Stein Eriksen Residences is life made fabulously easy. Both the Deer Valley-located lodge and the residences are recognized worldwide as preeminent luxury ski hotels, with distinct European charm, contemporary sophistication, and breathtaking natural surroundings. Named after Norwegian Olympic Gold Medal skier Stein Eriksen, the on-site sport rental shop is fully equipped for all ski needs (or bike needs in the summer), and mere steps away, the slopes await. Additional services include a ski locker room, ski valet, skier services, and lessons. There’s no need to rent a car at Stein Eriksen. A complimentary shuttle service (which is usually more of a private chauffeur service) will take guests to and from destinations within the vicinity, such as the Historic Main Street, the surrounding restaurants, and of course between the two Stein Eriksen properties. They also seamlessly coordinate your ski rentals and experience, meaning more time to enjoy the great outdoors, instead of staying in to deal with logistics.
As for the spacious residence rooms, expect the best of lodge living and a five-star hotel. You’ll find here plush king beds alongside magnificent mountain views; large bathrooms clad with Molton Brown pamper products; a kitchenette and a sitting area should you choose to have your morning brew and nibbles in bed (buffet breakfast is also included down in the restaurant, nevertheless tea addicts will be glad to find a kettle amenity in-room); and of course, meticulous service to rise up to just about any request.
Explore the Mountains via Snowmobile
Skiing isn’t the only way to take in the inspiring landscapes of Park City, Utah. Snowmobiling also offers a chance to do so, allowing guests to stop and soak in the wildlife and vistas, as well as seek an adrenaline rush across the dips and dives of the backcountry mountains. We suggest Backcountry Mountain Snowmobiling, where you can opt for a two-hour guided tour in the safety of a group. It’s suitable for beginners and above, and there’s the option to rent gear such as boots and gloves. Be sure to purchase a balaclava mask to keep the wind, rain, and snow at bay (it’s deceivingly harsh at the top), and although their vehicles have heated handlebars, a pack of hand warmers will do wonders (and some post-event lotion). Clothing depends on the time of year, but we found layering up with Merino wool natural fabrics and an insulated jacket more than sufficed.
Dine at America’s Most Delicious
The range of cuisines available in Park City will astonish even the most privileged of foodies, from casual brewpubs to fine dining, and even authentic Asian cuisine. The town may be small, but it’s certainly diverse (and all-welcoming). For lunch, a respite from the cold might come in the shape of an eaterie with steaming comforts. Try the Royal Street Cafe in Silver Lake Lodge (creative American and international) where you can watch skiers zoom by at the window in the company of hot sandwiches. Hearth and Hill, a family gathering spot in the Kimball Junction neighborhood sure knows how to hit the spot with dim sum, ramen, and gyozas. The Waldorf Astoria Park City’s Powder Restaurant is the place to fuel up with nutritious ancient grains and roasted vegetables. Need caffeine? Try Five5seeds on Snow Creek Drive.
For dinner, we recommend Stein Eriksen Lodge’s acclaimed Glitretind. The menu is seasonal, using locally sourced ingredients, but if you come across Rocky Mountain Elk then know it will not disappoint. The surprisingly tender meat comes with truffle-Jerusalem artichokes, kalettes, smoked hazelnuts, and pickled marionberry. At dessert, inquire about the chef’s handmade chocolates. Dining on Historic Main Street? Riverhorse on Main is a Soho House-style building, without the pretension and with flavors to remember. Their steaks were our standout, paired with exquisite old-world wine and live music, and it’s no wonder this is on the elite list of top restaurants in the nation. Park City also boasts RIME at the St. Regis Deer Valley, for those looking for the freshest (flown in daily) seafood in town—the shellfish platter is not to be missed. Finally, if you’re looking for the next big thing, then follow the locals to Tupelo. This trendy hangout offers delectable globally influenced cuisine with an emphasis on the south, think sensational shrimp & grits, elk bolognese, and buttermilk biscuits with honey butter. You heard it in Park City first.
Go Tubing at Woodward Park City
An ideal activity for the whole family, tubing provides for hours of snow-time fun on what many call giant inflatable donuts. Woodward Park City opened in December 2019 and serves as a year-round indoor and outdoor action sports and ski park. Their facilities include snowboarding, tubing, skiing, mountain biking, skateboarding, and more, depending on the season. What’s great about tubing, however, is that it is a group activity; you can hold on and tube down together with your family, ask your guide at the top to set you off at your desired speed or add twists such as spins which can be done in tandem. Competitive kids can even take two lanes and race each other. Check the website for the most current list of activities.
Relax at Utah’s only Five-Star Spa
