The mid-engined Acura NSX is a mythical supercar that still finds a place in the enthusiast’s hearts and automotive folklore. It was the greatest gift from none other than Ayrton Senna along with being a rude shock to the supercar establishment at that time. The chassis balance along with the iconic styling changed the way mid-engined supercars were seen or even built. Standing for “New”, “Sportscar” “eXperimental”, the NSX was Honda showcasing its engineering prowess and telling the world that it can build a supercar, a very good one at that.

The second-generation model came in years later and had a much more complicated ethos of being a hybrid supercar with an all-wheel-drive layout. Punters didn’t warm up to this NSX quite as much as its illustrious predecessor but it seems the final swansong of this supercar has sparked a lot of interest since the production runs for the Type S were sold out within just 24 hours. Yes, the Acura NSX Type S managed to find buyers for all of its 300 units being allocated to the US. It seems the NSX fever is back.

The NSX Type S is the final hurrah and a riotous send-off with no less than 600bhp is available now. It made its debut at the Monterey Car Week and just as the covers were peeled off, the sharper styling instantly made it more purposeful looking. It features more aggressive front and rear styling along with unique 5-spoke wheels, stickier Pirelli P-Zero tires, retuned Adaptive Damper System, Type S decals, a standard carbon-fiber roof, and available Gotham Gray matte paint.

The talking point is the power train as it is a combination of a twin-turbocharged V6 and a three-motor hybrid system. Hence it now makes 600-horsepower and 492 lb.-ft. of torque while lapping the Suzuka Circuit in Japan 2-seconds faster than the 2021 NSX. Unlike the first-generation NSX, the 2nd generation has been more complicated in terms of its underpinnings with the 9-speed DCT automatic and a torque-vectoring Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. It does adhere to the supercar ethos of lightness with Carbon Ceramic Brakes, Carbon Fiber Engine Cover, and Carbon Fiber interior package.

However, beyond this technology download, the reason why the Type S warms up to our hearts and is also is more successful is the fact that it is sharper and a more focused car- much like the original NSX. It is a luxurious everyday GT car with Acura sensibility but these changes channel in some pure NSX soul and for that, the Type S has to be the best iteration of this largely misunderstood supercar.
