While car-makers continue to obsess over SUVs, the glamorous convertible has somewhat hidden behind the limelight with the market falling out of love with it. While convertible versions of supercars continue to capture the market, the big four-seater convertible is becoming a rare species. Genesis is attempting to revive this genre of automobiles with its glorious X Convertible concept. It follows the X Concept and the X Speedium Coupe concept and completes the trilogy.
Shown at the LA Auto Show, the long bonnet, short overhangs, and boat-tail rear are reminiscent of the vast American convertibles of yore. There is a strong character line on the side but the execution of it is delicate along with the flowing design which adds a certain charm.
The front has a bolder interpretation of the traditional Genesis styling theme with the new EV face which forms an abstract of the Crest Grille. Chiseled haunches and the large quad lights round off an attractive design that does not try too hard.
The X Convertible has a folding hardtop roof that integrates transparent moon roofs above the front occupants which means one feels closer to the skies even when the roof is closed. The distinct white hue also no doubt adds to the regal stance and the ‘Crane white’ color represents nobility and sanctity in Korea.
The interior is at odds with its luxury pretensions with its driver-centric layout but the design is clean along with being devoid of needless clutter.
The inspiration has been Korean roof architecture and the Giwa Navy and Dancheong Orange colors are a nod toward that. “Giwa”, is named after the roof tiles on Korean houses while sustainability has been sprinkled all over the cabin in form of recyclable wool fabric, the textured, woven pad graphic wraps around the cabin.
The Genesis X Convertible concept shares its architecture and electric powertrain with the X Concept in 2021 and the X Speedium Coupe concept in 2022 while the smoothness of electric motors is somewhat well matched with the demeanor of a luxury convertible.
Should Genesis build it? We think so as it brings back the regal convertible with a distinct pared-back luxury atmosphere built-in. While it is now a concept, the X Convertible augurs well for the future design direction of this brand.
The current luxury convertible segment is only dominated by a few players but Genesis with its stunning design and with attractive price positioning is bound to attract a new clientele to the genre of luxury sports cars.
