There is no better tribute to one of the pioneers of style and design than a bespoke Maybach made from scratch in collaboration with the man himself. Following the wishes of Virgil’s family, the Project MAYBACH electric show car has been revealed and it is as radical as the legacy of Virgil Abloh with a free-thinking philosophy behind this car being untethered by production requirements. Abloh, collaboratively with Gorden Wagener, has designed an off-road-oriented 2-seater, battery-electric off-road coupé having huge Gran Turismo proportions, large off-road wheels, and distinctive styling details. It can be described as a dramatic re-writing of car design in general with a fresh outlook.

The theme used was the “future of design” and hence the designers exercised complete freedom in the proportions to the minute details. It is also an EV as, under the transparent surface of the show cars, there are solar cells that increase the imagined range of the Project MAYBACH. At almost six meters long, it’s bigger than the standard Maybach designs while having the usual regal Maybach front-end. The side and the rear are radical in forming an alluring SUV coupe shape which is somewhat unique along with massive wheel arches.

The off-road coupe sits two people and has an interior carefully styled by Abloh along with materials chosen by him and Mercedes. The off-road theme is there with the skid plate at the rear along with a huge ground clearance. Alongside being a prolific fashion designer and a figure who has changed the fashion industry, Abloh has been previously associated with Mercedes too with other projects like the Geländewagen.

“Mercedes-Benz is devastated to hear of the passing of Virgil Abloh. Our sincere thoughts are with Virgil’s family and teams. Now opening the world of our collaboration, and Virgil’s unique vision, to the public we want to respectfully celebrate the work of a truly unique design talent, who created endless possibilities for collaboration through his unbridled imagination and inspired all that knew his work.” Mercedes-Benz AG.
