Ferrari’s new hypercar the SF90 Stradale boasts next-generation hybrid technology while delivering 986 horsepower. Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Scuderia Ferrari race team, Stradale, the Italian word for “road” hints at the brands’ technology transfer from the F1 car to the new hypercar.
The plug-in hybrid has a powerful three-motor electric drive system vastly superior to the Ferrari’s last hybrid, the LaFerrari. The MGUK (Motor Generator Unit, Kinetic) electric motor helps drive the rear wheels or recapture brake energy while the other two electric motors – only theses are used to drive the wheels when the car is in electric mode – drive the front axle creating an all-wheel-drive system.
With the ability to carry the hypercar approximately 15 miles before the 4.0-liter turbocharged V-8 engine revs into gear, the Stradale is the most powerful Ferrari road car to date. In purely electric mode, its top speed is limited to 84-mph but it will accelerate to 62-mph in 2.5 seconds, reach 124-mph in 6.7 seconds, and top out at 211-mph.
