Upscale Living Magazine soaks up the luxury lifestyle at the 2018 event

A dazzling display of the finest superyachts for sale in the world, it’s understandable that when you talk of the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS), the first thing that springs to mind is yachts. But this prestigious event, which is held every September in the principality’s glittering Port Hercules, is also a showcase dedicated to all aspects of the luxury lifestyle, including cars, helicopters and watches – not to mention the setting for some very exclusive events. Upscale Living Magazine went behind the scenes at this year’s MYS, which was held from September 26th to 29th, to bring you the highlights away from the yachts.

The Monaco Yacht Show parties

From black-tie balls hosted by HSH Prince Albert II to casual cocktails at the exhibitor stands, as the sun sets the MYS lights up for an evening of glamorous events. The hottest tickets in town included Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s Monte Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean 2018 on the opening night of the show, Fraser Yacht’s long-running Captain’s Dinner on Thursday evening and the Boat International Party in the very trendy Twiga nightclub on Friday night.

Another event that had everyone talking was the James Bond party at the Yacht Club de Monaco. Hosted by three superyacht Marinas including Marina Di Stabia, guests mingled with Bond girls and sipped martinis, of course. The dress code? Smart and sexy.

The Helicopters

The skies above the principality were buzzing as yet another Monaco Yacht Show helicopter transfer took off, bound for Nice Côte d’Azur airport and beyond. With a flight time of seven minutes (compared to an hour in traffic or more), it’s definitely the smart way to travel around the Côte d’Azur. It’s also a mode of transport that complements the luxury lifestyle and we couldn’t help but notice at this year’s show the growing number of yachts being launched complete with helipads. Helicopter manufacturers such as Bell and Leonardo had also flown in their latest models to display.

The Cars

While the principality was awash with all sorts of luxury brands transferring VIP guests to and from the show, the stationary vehicles at the Car Deck on Quai Antoine 1er were one of the main attractions. A display of rare supercars and one-off models, we’d particularly love to set off on an adventure in one of Italian manufacturer ARES Design’s customized Land Rover Defender. There are currently only 53 in the world, at a cost of €215,000 each.

The most photographed double act of the Monaco Yacht Show, however, was the light-blue Lamborghini Aventador and El Toro de Lamborghini. Custom made by Bernico for a client who wanted a power boat to match his car, the vessel can reach speeds of 160 kilometres per hour.

The Watches

An essential item of any Monaco Yacht Show dress code is a very smart watch and there are none finer than the wristwear of official MYS sponsor, Ulysse Nardin. Its marine chronometers are the perfect accessory for yachting enthusiasts, and to mark the show the Swiss brand unveiled its Diver Chronometer collection. The range includes a Monaco Limited Edition Model. Only 100 pieces were made, and the Monegasque flag and the Monaco Coat of Arms are just some of the special features.
