Paris-based jewelry designer Yvonne Léon has always had a knack for rewriting the codes of fine jewelry with a wink. For her latest high-summer collection, she has taken one of the season’s most beloved materials, raffia, and recast it in 18-karat gold. The result is a sun-drenched series of rings, necklaces, hoop earrings, and bracelets that conjure the spirit of Mediterranean summers.
Where most see raffia as humble, Yvonne sees jeweled inspiration. Her fascination with the material stems from its evocation of beach days and tactile memories: woven sun hats, market bags, the spontaneous elegance of coastal living. “Raffia is so evocative of summer,” she explains. “I wanted to mimic its texture and lightness using gold and gemstones, without losing the carefree mood it brings.” The pieces don’t just nod to the season; they embody it.
Engraved gold mimics the crisscross of woven fibers, while citrine, peridot, and turquoise are peppered throughout to capture the gleam of summer light. Movement is central to the collection, with pieces designed to drape, sway, and shift, and echoing the easy rhythm of warm days by the sea. “I focused on texture and movement,” Yvonne says, “keeping it airy and joyful, but still refined.”
This is jewelry that carries a sense of nostalgia and innovation in equal measure. Raised in a family of jewelers, Yvonne came to design via a background in fashion styling, and that instinct for layering, story, and individuality continues to define her work. “I still love contrast, nostalgia, and pieces that make people smile,” she says. Her Parisian atelier produces every piece in collaboration with skilled French artisans, ensuring a quiet sense of excellence behind the whimsy.
Alongside the raffia-inspired designs being unveiled at COUTURE, she will bring new stackable pieces crafted with enamel and vibrant stones, as well as fresh additions to her ear jewelry. Additionally, she is debuting Un, Deux, Trois — a new sculptural ring that simulates a trio stacked in harmony, crafted from a single block. This ring, she adds, is a study in deceptive simplicity and graphic form. The delightful minaudière pendants, rendered in the raffia texture, are bound to be a hit with jewelry lovers.
For Yvonne, jewelry is her design language. And in this latest raffia-inspired collection, she speaks fluent summer. Golden, breezy, and just a little offbeat.
