Genesis is moving further upmarket with its two new concepts as it moves towards the luxury grand tourer segment, which has primarily been dominated by the likes of Bentley. The new Genesis Gran Coupe concepts are based on the flagship G90 sedan but sport much more aggressive designs in line with their sportier image. We like the fact that these two are much more than just a pair of chopped-up G90 cars, as there is a sense of design direction being carved out here by Genesis. These two concepts, in essence, are a pair of convertible/coupe versions of the G90, which hints that in the future we can get production versions of these cars. While the surfacing is sleek, both cars adopt the new lighting pattern as seen on the G90, which includes the ‘Two-Line headlights’, which extend toward each model’s Genesis Crest Grille.
The 3D grille meshes are inspired by woven metal strings arranged in diamond-shaped Two-Line patterns. There are also wider intakes, more sculpted hoods, and a lowered stance. Of course, with such sporty designs, both concepts also have steeply raked windscreens, lower roof heights for the cabins, along with bespoke doors for easier ingress and egress. The X Gran Coupe concept, the roof, and the cant rail have been integrated, which sort of resembles the canopy of sports cars. The X Convertible concept, meanwhile, has a beltline that is further back, which cuts a fine line from the soft top. Even the wheels have a 5-star pattern, which contrasts with the two spokes.
The rear also has a smoother design with clean surfacing while having two-line tail-lights. Inside, the design has a luxury lounge-like vibe while being inspired by Mediterranean olive trees, and even the door mats have olive leaf motifs. Elsewhere, even the leather roof is quilted, while crystal detailing can be found on the steering, center console, and vents. Both concepts have bold colors, while the violet gets our vote, which comes inspired by Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. While currently concepts, being based on the G90, enable it to be production-ready ready and these two are perhaps unlocking a new side for Genesis with a bolder approach rather than their sedans or SUVs. Here is hoping that we get to see them at Genesis showrooms sooner rather than later, as they will propel this brand further in the higher-end luxury space.
