One of racing’s most famous cars has never competed in Formula 1. That, however, has not stopped Lightning McQueen from becoming a motorsport icon in his own right. Now, two decades after Disney and Pixar introduced the red No. 95 race car to audiences around the world, the fictional Piston Cup champion is heading to one of the most legendary circuits in real-world racing.

Lightning McQueen will appear at Monza during the 2026 Italian Grand Prix weekend as Formula 1 and Disney expand their “Fuel the Magic” partnership, bringing the Cars franchise into the collaboration for the first time.

The arrival could hardly be better timed. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Disney and Pixar’s Cars, and Lightning McQueen will arrive in Italy with a new look created to commemorate the milestone. The setting is particularly fitting. Monza is one of Formula 1’s most evocative destinations, a circuit synonymous with speed, Ferrari and generations of motorsport history. Bringing McQueen into that environment creates an intriguing meeting of two racing worlds: one grounded in competition and heritage, the other built through storytelling and nostalgia.

Lightning McQueen to Formula 1

Formula 1 and Disney first introduced “Fuel the Magic” in 2025, using merchandise, live events and original content to bring Disney characters into the increasingly broad cultural universe surrounding the sport. Cars becomes the first Disney franchise outside Mickey & Friends to join the partnership, reflecting both the natural connection between the animated series and motorsport and the enduring appeal of Lightning McQueen himself.

The collaboration will also include a new Formula 1 and Disney and Pixar Cars merchandise collection. The first six pieces were unveiled at D23 on August 14, including a Disney Store-exclusive hat and fleece as well as Mattel die-cast models. Following its initial online launch, the collection is scheduled to expand globally from August 27 before appearing at the Formula 1 Flagship Store during the Italian Grand Prix.

The project arrives at a moment when Formula 1’s influence extends far beyond the paddock. Recent seasons have seen the championship move deeper into fashion, entertainment and popular culture, creating partnerships and experiences designed to reach audiences who may never have considered themselves traditional racing fans.

Disney has already become part of that strategy. During the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix, the partnership included a Disney Live Entertainment performance staged against the Bellagio fountains. At the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, a Formula 1 show car appeared at Shanghai Disneyland Resort, while Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck later entered the racing conversation through F1 Academy at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Make a wish helmet

One of the most notable moments came at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix, where Formula 1 and Disney created a custom Mickey Mouse-inspired racing helmet signed by all 20 F1 drivers. The helmet ultimately sold through F1 Authentics for £151,000, approximately $201,000, benefiting Make-A-Wish International and becoming the highest-value charitable item ever sold through the platform.

Yet Lightning McQueen’s arrival may prove particularly resonant. Cars introduced an entire generation to racing through characters, competition and the mythology of the open road. For many younger fans, McQueen was their first racing hero long before they knew the names of Formula 1 champions or understood the significance of circuits such as Monza.

That connection gives this latest collaboration an emotional dimension that extends beyond merchandise. It places childhood nostalgia alongside the spectacle of modern Formula 1, creating an experience that speaks equally to longtime Disney fans, younger audiences and motorsport enthusiasts.

The partnership between Formula 1 and Disney has now been extended through the 2028 season, with additional content, merchandise and fan experiences planned. Its WEBTOON comic series will also continue, while further initiatives are expected to be revealed as the partnership develops.

For now, though, the focus turns to Italy. When Lightning McQueen arrives at Monza, he will be entering a world populated not by animated competitors, but by some of the fastest machines and most celebrated drivers on the planet.

For a character built around speed, ambition and racing glory, there may be no more fitting place to make the crossover.
